The VPI project successfully executed a large-scale conversion of a 1,000-node high-performance computing cluster from pure InfiniBand (IB) to 40Gb Ethernet (40GbE) and subsequently returned the cluster to its original IB configuration—all without any hardware modifications.
The objective was to validate the feasibility, performance, and operational effectiveness of 40GbE networking technology at scale, while ensuring minimal disruption and complete functional parity with the existing IB environment.
Key accomplishments include:
The team transitioned the entire cluster from IB to 40GbE within a strict two-hour maintenance window, leveraging VPI capabilities to switch network modes via software configuration.
Over a two-day period, end-to-end validation tests were performed on system connectivity, performance, workload execution, and stability across all 1,000 nodes while operating under 40GbE.
After validation, the cluster was restored to its original IB mode within the same two-hour change window, demonstrating reversible and repeatable conversion procedures.
The effort confirmed that 40GbE could operate reliably across a large HPC cluster, validating its readiness for future production deployments.
This project represents a significant milestone in demonstrating flexible network interoperability at scale. The successful conversion and full validation cycle provide strong confidence in the adaptability of the infrastructure and the viability of 40GbE for future large-scale HPC environments.
